History

New Hill has a tiny, quaint historic district that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The New Hope Valley Railway is located in New Hill and offers visitors 8-mile round-trip excursion rides on vintage locomotives, including a No. 17 steam locomotive, vintage diesel-electric locomotives, open-air passenger cars, and a family caboose. You can even purchase a special ticket for their Operate-a-Loco program that puts you in the driver’s seat of one of their diesel engines! In the early 20th century, the railway connected to a larger network of tracks and was nicknamed “The Lightnin’ Bug Route” because of the hundreds of fireflies the railroad workers noticed when working into the evening hours. In addition to the railway, there is also an open-air museum with plenty of railroad artifacts to see, including: The Goldston Depot, the USOX 8707 Exhibit Car, Locomotive #4, Southern Railway Post Office & Baggage Car 188, Boxcars, Cabooses, and more. The train and museum are run 100% by volunteers with a passion for preserving the important railroad history of the area.

Activities

Harris Lake County Park is one of the natural gems of New Hill. This 680-acre park, situated on a peninsula of Harris Lake, is a beautiful spot for a relaxing afternoon. The park is heavily wooded and offers miles of hiking and biking trails, picnic areas, fishing, disc-golf, a playground, an open play area, and a volleyball court. There is also a launch site for canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards. The 4,100-acre Harris Lake does allow motorized watercraft, and while there are no motorized boat launches within the park, you may launch at either Holleman’s Crossing or Cross Point Landing boat ramps, operated by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission.

The American Tobacco Trail is one of the most popular trails in the area and conveniently runs through New Hill. The trail extends over 22 miles from Durham to Apex and offers beautiful views of nature for walkers, runners, and cyclists to enjoy. The Wake County maintained portion of the trail, which includes the New Hill area, also allows for horseback riding. The trail weaves through beautiful pines that are home to an abundance of wildlife you may view on your journey including owls, herons, hawks, turtles, deer, and beavers.

Horse and Buddy is an amazing therapeutic riding program located in New Hill whose mission is to “enrich the lives of children and adults with special needs through equine assisted therapies and activities in a safe and caring environment.” They have a fully trained staff and also train volunteers to assist with the horses and participants and have received rave reviews from clients and their families.

Life in New Hill

Because of the easy access to US-1, Hwy 64, and I-540; and the close proximity to the many jobs offered within Research Triangle Park, New Hill is becoming a more sought-after destination for those wishing to get away from it all and settle down in a quiet home in the country while still maintaining a close proximity to all of the amenities and modern conveniences of the nearby bigger towns.
