New Hill: A Pastoral Paradise
A Realtor’s Guide to Experiencing the Best New Hill Has to Offer
New Hill is a picturesque, rural town nestled on the outskirts of Apex and Holly Springs. The bucolic landscape of New Hill has seen bits of growth in recent years as more people are choosing to flee bigger, more populated cities in order to live a simpler, back-to-basics lifestyle. New Hill provides residents with the best of both worlds by offering natural beauty in a quiet, peaceful setting while still in close proximity to the modern conveniences of bigger towns like Apex, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina, and Raleigh. Erica Anderson, a top REALTOR® located in nearby Holly Springs and owner of Team Anderson Realty, has been serving the real estate needs of the community since 2014.
New Hill has a tiny, quaint historic district that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The New Hope Valley Railway is located in New Hill and offers visitors 8-mile round-trip excursion rides on vintage locomotives, including a No. 17 steam locomotive, vintage diesel-electric locomotives, open-air passenger cars, and a family caboose. You can even purchase a special ticket for their Operate-a-Loco program that puts you in the driver’s seat of one of their diesel engines! In the early 20th century, the railway connected to a larger network of tracks and was nicknamed “The Lightnin’ Bug Route” because of the hundreds of fireflies the railroad workers noticed when working into the evening hours. In addition to the railway, there is also an open-air museum with plenty of railroad artifacts to see, including: The Goldston Depot, the USOX 8707 Exhibit Car, Locomotive #4, Southern Railway Post Office & Baggage Car 188, Boxcars, Cabooses, and more. The train and museum are run 100% by volunteers with a passion for preserving the important railroad history of the area.
Harris Lake County Park is one of the natural gems of New Hill. This 680-acre park, situated on a peninsula of Harris Lake, is a beautiful spot for a relaxing afternoon. The park is heavily wooded and offers miles of hiking and biking trails, picnic areas, fishing, disc-golf, a playground, an open play area, and a volleyball court. There is also a launch site for canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards. The 4,100-acre Harris Lake does allow motorized watercraft, and while there are no motorized boat launches within the park, you may launch at either Holleman’s Crossing or Cross Point Landing boat ramps, operated by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission.
The American Tobacco Trail is one of the most popular trails in the area and conveniently runs through New Hill. The trail extends over 22 miles from Durham to Apex and offers beautiful views of nature for walkers, runners, and cyclists to enjoy. The Wake County maintained portion of the trail, which includes the New Hill area, also allows for horseback riding. The trail weaves through beautiful pines that are home to an abundance of wildlife you may view on your journey including owls, herons, hawks, turtles, deer, and beavers.
Horse and Buddy is an amazing therapeutic riding program located in New Hill whose mission is to “enrich the lives of children and adults with special needs through equine assisted therapies and activities in a safe and caring environment.” They have a fully trained staff and also train volunteers to assist with the horses and participants and have received rave reviews from clients and their families.
Life in New Hill
Because of the easy access to US-1, Hwy 64, and I-540; and the close proximity to the many jobs offered within Research Triangle Park, New Hill is becoming a more sought-after destination for those wishing to get away from it all and settle down in a quiet home in the country while still maintaining a close proximity to all of the amenities and modern conveniences of the nearby bigger towns. It’s a great place for those looking for a simpler, peaceful lifestyle surrounded by nature. New Hill offers an excellent opportunity for people who desire land for horses, small farming, free-range space for your kids to play, or just a safe, quiet place to enjoy the natural beauty New Hill has to offer. New Hill, despite having its own quaint post office, is fully governed by the Town of Apex. Apex and children in New Hill attend Apex schools, which include the highly desirable Apex Friendship Middle and High Schools. The Friendship schools are named after a settlement founded after the end of the Civil War that included recently emancipated slaves, Native Americans, and whites whose goal was to find a way to live together in a community, and in the spirit of cooperativeness, community leaders decided to name their settlement Friendship, which is where Apex Friendship schools stand today. New Hill is located in Wake County, whose schools are among the best in the state, and the Raleigh-Durham area is home to some of the most prestigious colleges and universities in the country, which makes New Hill a great choice for families that desire to live an idyllic country lifestyle while still having access to great education.
If you are thinking of moving to New Hill but would prefer subdivision living, Jordan Pointe is a fabulous new community that promotes an outdoor lifestyle offering residents walking trails, a dog park, a swimming pool and cabana, a basketball court, and a picnic and playground area. Jordan Pointe offers gorgeous, custom-built single-family homes and estate homes nestled on large lots ($600s-$1M). Woodbury is another new master-planned community that offers signature farmhouse-style homes and townhomes located just 6 miles from downtown Apex; the community features two fishing ponds with docks; a pool with swim lanes and a kid zone; a clubhouse with fitness center and kitchen; a fire-pit and grill area with cornhole; pickleball and basketball courts; and a bocce ball lawn ($300s-$500s). Jordan Manor offers custom-built, single-family homes with designer finishes and features a community pool, cabana, trails, playground, and a pickleball court ($400s). Belterra is a community currently in pre-construction that will offer ranch and 2-story homes with a community pool and cabana (prices not yet listed).
