Downtown Apex

Downtown Apex is one of the most quaint and beloved areas of the Triangle. It was officially designated a Historic District in 1994 and has commercial and residential buildings that date back to the 1800s. The Depot, which was built in the late 19th century and once served as the highest point on the Old Chatham Railroad, is now home to a historical museum which features an Old Caboose as an homage to Apex’s important history on the rail line.

There are a variety of delicious options for dining out downtown including The Provincial, Scratch Kitchen & Tap Room, Salem Street Pub, The Peak on Salem, and Anna’s Pizzeria. While strolling down N. Salem Street you may also want to pop into one of the boutique shops located in the historic district, like Stylish Living, The Rusty Bucket, or Southern Home Crafts.

Shopping and Dining

In addition to the delicious dining options offered in the historic downtown district, there are plenty of locally-owned offerings sprinkled throughout the city. Doherty’s Irish Pub is a popular place, serving the best fish and chips in town and also offers a scrumptious Sunday brunch menu. Daniel’s is a favorite amongst locals for their delicious Italian fare. If you are looking for a meatless dining experience that doesn’t sacrifice taste, The Vegan Kitchen offers a 100% vegan menu featuring delicious Mediterranean dishes. JD’s Tavern and Skipper’s Fish Fry are also favorite spots to grab lunch or dinner. Additionally, Apex is home to some local breweries

so if you fancy a pint be sure to stop by Vicous Fishes, Brueprint, or Southern Peak. You can also find almost any chain restaurant in the area…the options are endless!

Beaver Creek Commons/Crossings is a popular shopping and dining destination in Apex. You can find just about anything you need in this shopping center… Target, Lowes Home Improvement, Kohl’s, TJ Maxx/Homegoods, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Bath & Body Works, Old Navy, Ulta, and more. There is also a Regal movie theater, and plenty of dining options.

Activities

There is no shortage of activities to keep you and your family entertained in this town! Knights Play is a popular par-3 public golf course offering both 18-hole and 9-hole courses, a 60-station driving range, all of which are fully illuminated with state-of-the-art lighting so you can swing well into the late evening hours! Moreover, they have a golf pro shop, a full-service clubhouse and grill, provide lessons and clinics, and are conveniently located on Ten-Ten Road.

If extreme air sports are more your speed, Defy Apex, an indoor trampoline park, is a must visit attraction!  It features giant, bouncy, floor-level trampolines, aerial silks, a ninja obstacle course, foam pits, extreme dodgeball, a trapeze, and more. For the smaller kids we recommend Bounce U, which is full of fun, bouncy bliss for the littles! However, if treasure is what you seek, be sure to take your family to Treasure Quest Mining where you can pan for gems, minerals, shells, fossils, and even gold! C.C. Jones Community Building

features a Jr. Olympic-size swimming pool, diving boards, a wading pool, lifeguards, lessons, and a swim team. For an outdoor adventure on wheels head over to Rodgers Family Skate Plaza, a 13,000 sq ft, 4-tiered skate plaza that is a favorite destination for skateboarders and in-line skaters alike.

Apex is home to a number of beautiful parks like Apex Community Park, which boasts 160-acres of fitness and nature trails, baseball fields, batting cages, tennis, volleyball, and basketball courts, a playground, and a beautiful lake that offers fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Another area favorite is Kelly Road Park- with its “magical” castle-like playground structures kids feel like they’ve walked into their favorite fairy-tale! The park also has a lighted softball field, tennis court, basketball court, pickleball court, and picnic shelter. The upcoming Pleasant Park has everyone in town excited and anticipating its completion! It will feature 6 multi-purpose fields with concession area, 4 baseball/softball fields and batting cages, 4 tennis courts, a splash pad, 1.5-acre Enchanted Forest with numerous play villages (Kingdom in the Clouds, Gnome’s Hollow, and Discovery Dig just to name a few!), 3 picnic shelters, and a food truck alley. The initial opening is scheduled for fall 2021. Apex is also an entry-point to the American Tobacco Trail, a popular 20-mile walking and biking trail that connects Apex to Durham. For outdoor enthusiasts, Jordan Lake is a must visit for a lovely weekend of fishing, boating, and camping.

Cultural Events & Festivals

Apex hosts a variety of fun, family-friendly festivals each year. Peakfest is the city’s signature event, usually held in May, and offers live music, arts and crafts vendors, food vendors, and entertainment for kids. Another can’t miss event is Peak City Pig Fest, normally held in June, which is a lively street festival featuring some of the most mouth-watering BBQ competitions you could imagine, as well as pig races, a beer garden, and live music. Speaking of music, be sure to attend the Apex Jazz & Music Festival in September, which welcomes you into the lovely fall season of NC by listening to live performances by local Jazz and Blues musicians. Every Saturday from April through October, downtown Apex hosts a farmer’s market that features a wide variety of seasonal fruits and vegetables, fish, poultry, beef, pork, eggs, jams and preserves, ready-made meals, desserts, and even specialty candles and soaps.
